DO YOU KNOW HOW TO BECOME A LIFE LONG LEARNER / DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS?
As children our daily task is to learn as much as we can everyday, try new things, experience, test our nerves when we’re told no, to do it anyway.
When we become young adults in college, we are learning more academics or theory based principles.
During our adult years, we are putting to practice our theories & tested skills of what our earlier years & education has taught us.
However, as we become more experienced, the saying we try to abide by is to: “learn something new everyday”. Sometimes that holds true, other days, well not so much because life can get in the way.
Medical science has found that continued learning something new to challenge our mind is ‘good for our brain cells, to keep them growing’.
Why? Well, the old saying of; “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it”, is derived from the use of the brain cells, their continued use, stimulation & growth.
However, today is not a neurological lesson on the brain cells.
Today I want to share how you can become a Lifelong Learner.
Continuing to learn things is a way of continued growth within yourself. It’s easy, doesn’t require costs classes & something you can & may be doing right now on your own. But the question is, are you doing it properly.
Here is what I’m referring to:
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO BECOME A LIFE LONG LEARNER / DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS?
Start with your attitude:
Lifelong learning begins with a heart that desires change, wisdom & application.
Ask questions:
Learners ask good question. They possess a passionate curiosity, the longing to know, discover & inquire about things. Ask questions that get below the surface.
Join others:
Collaborative learning; in classes, small groups, with friends & colleagues. This allows you to benefit from diverse perspectives & approaches. People are a gold mine of learning that just is tapped through conversations.
Check out the other side:
Take time to examine & understand another point of view openly, even if it radically contradicts yours. You may see things in a new light, or you may have your old convictions strengthened. Personal convictions that have never been tested, can remain flimsy.
Read broadly:
Include a diversity of books, authors, & topics. Resist the temptation to read only those books that reinforce what you already believe or know. Include personal development books to help your inner self growth, to mature & stay positive about yourself.
Keep a journal:
Recording what you learn, captures your growth in wisdom.
Experiment:
Try new approaches & ideas. Age does not affect your ability to learn. A ninety (90) year old can learn to surf the net like an eighteen (18) year old.
Apply what you know:
Our depth of understanding is often directly related to our ability to apply what we’ve learned. Application of what we’ve learned, takes knowledge from the head (brain) to the heart.
We should ALL make it a point to learn something(s) new everyday. Make it a “habit” to learn & do something you’ve never done before, everyday.
Remember this: a day without learning new things, is a day without growing.
“You can’t start the next chapter of your life, if you keep re-reading the last one”……..

I was actually told by a “well-educated” mom…”read all you can now because once you have kids…its over.” I was shocked and disappointed because I agree. We should never stop learning, growing and becoming even better. Life ends when you stop learning and so I LOVE your simple solutions!
I agree Mom’s with kids have the least opportunity to relax & read since they must be on their toes at all times. Life really does sort of end when you stop learning because just like fertilizer is to plants for growth, reading is to humans for growth. Thank you Kristin for your great insight, I love your analogies.
Like always Linda you are right on the button. Learning is what keeps us involved. I have grandchildren now so I am finding I am learning all over again and I wouldn’t change a thing because I believe it keeps you young..:)
Rhonda you are spot on, you get it! The beauty of your grandchildren teaching things now, you are learning this new NOW, you’re able to keep up with NOW. That’s awesome..Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I love it.
