What Do You Do If Your Friend Has A Chronic Illness? | Here’s what you CAN do.

What is a ‘chronic’ illness?

This is an illness that has frequent recurrences over a long duration of time.

Sometimes the illness can be resolved, however, there are so many that have no resolution.

So, what do you do for a friend of yours that has a chronic illness?

Mail them healing – get well notes.

Put a special message in them like; “hoping you’re feeling better,” “thinking of you,” “praying for your healing.”   These have special meaning during a flare up of their illness that becomes more intense.  This is a wonderful gift of hope & love.

Just listen to them.

Be willing to just listen without offering any advice.

Confirm their identity.

Most of the time their illness prevents them from doing what they always did.  They need to be reminded that their identity does not lie in what they can or can’t do.

Be willing to cry with them.

The best comfort received from a friend, is not words of wisdom, but tears of sorrow.

Give them time.

A person with a chronic illness needs time to weep, to question, to wonder & to grieve the loss of health.  Encourage them to be patient with themselves when accepting their limitations.  It may take much longer than expected, especially if they have been healthy most of their life.

Encourage.

You have to encourage them to develop new goals & expectations, to look at what they can rather than focus on what they cannot.  Also, help them grant themselves permission to rest & to cancel any plans if necessary.

By all means, Use the power of prayer.

Let them know how you are specifically praying for them & welcome their prayer requests.

There’s nothing more isolating than having a ‘Chronic Illness’.

Don’t ignore your friends if they are victim to a ‘chronic illness’, they really need to know you’re always there for them.

Treat you friend with respect & the same way you’ve always treated them.

Ask them, how often they would like you to come by, honestly.

  1. This is such an important message Linda. When people have to come to terms with a life long illness or injury, a lot of the time the best thing you can do is just be there for them in whatever way they prefer. Laugh, or cry…. just be there. 🙂

  2. Wow what an amazing post Linda! Truly empowering advice, I also love the quote you have “The battles that count aren’t the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself, the invisible battle inside all of us, that’s where it’s at”…thanks for sharing!
