“Why Am I Never Getting Anything Done?” | How to get yourself disciplined & organized.

“WHY AM I NEVER GETTING ANYTHING DONE?”

Wow I’ve heard so many people say this, haven’t you?

Maybe you’re even one of them!

This was something I never had a whole lot of problem with, I suppose it’s because of how I was raised since I was born into a family business.

However that doesn’t mean I, nor anyone else, couldn’t use a few reminders that may take care of something that gets in the way.

So I’m going to share a few common & very simple thoughts that may help you in the long run.

How to get yourself disciplined & organized.

Be on time & ready to work.

This may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many think that getting in their office means checking out Facebook, messages & emails should be done first.  If you find yourself cruising, engaging in comments, participating in open chats & cruising Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest all day long, that is NOT working or doing work producing activities.

Discipline yourself to leave those activities off until you get your work that’s required to be done first.  Unless you’re expecting a response to a work related task , your focus should only be on work & work producing activities during your scheduled work time.

Start small.

Look around, if your space, room or office is stacked with papers, & there’s clutter everywhere, clean in out & de-clutter!

Go through one pile at a time, if it has no legal, educational or business need, throw it out or shred it.  Clean up your room & then keep it clean.  When something is out of place, discipline yourself to put it where it belongs.  Gradually continue this discipline to the rest of your house.

Organize your life.

Make it a point to use your time, rather than just reacting to circumstances.  Use a calendar, make a daily list of things you need to accomplish for the day.  If you don’t control your time, everything else will control you.

Practice self-denial.

You must learn to say no to your feelings.  By doing this it shows you what you need to avoid, by just saying no.  To develop this, occasionally deny yourself things that would be all right, just to get this no feeling mastered for yourself.  Learn to do what you know to be right, even if you don’t like it.

Do the hardest job first.

This will prevent the most difficult tasks from being left undone.

I remember as a child, I hated the crust on pie because it was kinda dry & tasteless to me.  My parents made sure I ate the “whole” piece of pie if I requested a piece or I couldn’t have one at  all.  Now to some, this sounds harsh, but what I learned was to eat the crust first to get it out of the way, then I could enjoy the best part when that was done!  To this day, I still eat the crust first.

Doing what I didn’t like first, like with the pie, is what I’ve always done to get it out of the way, off my mind & it makes the rest of the tasks so much easier & I’m better focused.

Accept correction.

Correction really helps to make you more disciplined because it shows you what you need to avoid & stops the struggle in trying to find it yourself.  I love correction & constructive criticism from someone whose already been through where I am at now.  Who knows better than the one who has already found out the hard way!

Don’t avoid criticism from a mentor, accept it gladly & be grateful they care enough to share with you.

Look for & welcome responsibility.

If you have an opportunity to do something that needs to be done, volunteer for it IF you have a skill, talent or expertise in that area.  Welcoming responsibility forces you to organize yourself.

Developing your own self discipline & organizing yourself with double your efficiency, immediately.

No one can organize you, except you.  You need to have your own system & find a smooth way to carry it out.

No you don’t need to wait until you get new furniture, a room with a window, a new coat of paint or special equipment.

You just need to work with what you have, get it organized now & train yourself to be disciplined.

It does NOT take a day, week, month or “later” (when ever that is to you), it takes only moments!

So stop putting getting organized & disciplined off, that alone shows how un-disciplined you are.

Do it now & stop wondering why you never get anything done, it’s right there in your control!!!

  1. To get things done properly and on time, discipline is required! A lot of people could gain a lot of insights into how to perform at a higher standard by reading this blog post!

  2. Thank you Linda! It seems I am always feeling a bit disorganized, and feel like I am spinning my wheels on everything but never getting anywhere with any of it. It seems overwhelming sometimes, so it’s easier to keep putting it off. But as you so nicely pointed out if you start small, maybe with one thing and go on form there, I can see more clearly how it can work and help me with so many different areas. Thanks for this!
