“I Think I’m a Great Friend To Others!” | How to become a better friend

“I THINK I’M A GREAT FRIEND TO OTHERS!”

Hold on a second, let’s really look at this.

Everyone thinks they’re a great friend, but are you?

If you HONESTLY had to rate yourself as a friend, what would you say?

Do these answers include your being:

  • a listener,
  • a giver,
  • a unconditional supporter,
  • a nurturer,
  • do you give unsolicited acts of kindness?

Yeah, you see it takes more than just saying your someone’s friend.

There are many things that truly “qualify” someone to be a “real” friend.

Check out some of these thoughts below & see where you fit.

See how many of these qualities you have when you’re rating yourself as a “friend”:

How to become a better friend

(Honestly ask yourself the following questions:)

Do you encourage other people to develop their strengths & graciously help them overcome weaknesses?

Can you enjoy a friend’s good fortune; whether in marriage, career or motherhood, even if you are not on a parallel track?

Do you live an authentic life based on your values & beliefs, honestly?

Can you listen when a friend tells you that you have hurt her/him, or do you withdraw & even get defensive?

Can you ask for & grant absolute forgiveness?

Do you practice unsolicited acts of kindness consistently?

Are you loyal, & do you guard your friends’ secrets?

Do you reach out to others rather than always expect that they will call, text or come by to see you?

Do you reciprocate?

Do you refuse to become the only nurturer in the relationship?

Do you approach others with an attitude of acceptance & interest?

Are you a good listener, or do you claim more than your share of the airtime?

When you meet others, are you open to the possibility that they may become future allies, confidantes, best friends?

Did you find any of these traits identify you as a friend, or are you missing a few yet?

Read them over again.

In order to have a good friendship, you have to have these qualities

OR do you find that friend qualities/traits; don’t matter, they’re not requirements, who cares about these?

Well I can tell you that your “friend” does.

It’s one thing to be a surface friend of occasional passing & have no amount of quality in the relationship.

But, if you are someone who really needs someone to trust, support you & help you unconditionally get through whatever issues that are tearing you apart right now, it does matter.
