“I CAN’T JUST “CHILL”, I’VE GOT TOO MUCH TO DO!”
Oh, how many of us have heard that statement.
Maybe better asked, how many of YOU have said this.
Unfortunately too many of us I know have said this very thing, & that’s a problem.
Not taking time for yourself is not good, unhealthy & frankly, selfish.
Yes I said s e l f i s h.
When you spend all your time running around, jumping from task to task to task, all you’re doing is stressing yourself out.
Now, as a Nurse, what do I deep telling you?
That’s right, stress builds up & is not good for your health, remember that, please.
Don’t worry, I’ll keep reminding you…
Everyone needs time to “chill out” & re-charge themselves. Well correctly stated, your body needs time to chill out & re-charge!
Your brain also needs time to de – clutter, get the noise out, empty out the distractions.
Here are some thoughts of how you can “chill out” & get yourself re charged again.
HOW TO TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF & RE-CHARGE
- Find a chill-out spot, even within a hour’s drive from home, where people don’t know you. You might discover a favorite coffee hangout, a lake, cafe’, or state park. Each time you arrive at that special destination, have it be your special place to just sit & read, sit & dream, sit & enjoy the quietness that’s not available at home.
- Spend the afternoon at a large bookstore. Find a overstuffed chair, sip a cup of coffee or tea, read an interesting book that caught your eye, take a nap, even pray quietly. Notice the smell of the bookstore, the aroma of published books.
- Develop a new hobby or revisit an old hobby. If you don’t have one, do an online search for hobbies. Carve out an hour a day minimum to let yourself get involved in the tasks of the hobby & enjoy the feeling of accomplishing the tasks. These small ‘wins’ of completion are good for the soul.
- Schedule a weekly round of golf, tennis, racquetball, or hoops for a regular chill out time away from home.
- Go bowling or even join a league. For some reason, there’s something both nostalgic & therapeutic about picking up a solid ball & throwing it at 10 pins.
- Take up gardening. Many people don’t have the patience for the gardening process, but you might just find how relaxing it can be to dig in the dirt & grow flowers & foods.
- Take an aerobics or martial arts class that focuses more on stretching or exercise, rather than on fancy fighting moves.
- Take up a music lesson on an instrument you’ve always wanted to learn how to play.
These “chill out” thoughts are not limited to these, but will trigger another thought in your mind that you never considered taking the time to do.
If you don’t take time for yourself, your life is going to pass by & you will not even be a participant in it, only a spectator.
You daily life consists of the sights, the smells, the feelings, the sounds & the calmness that comes over you when you just let yourself be you – without guilt.
Don’t wait until you “retire” to work on you, because that day may either never come, or you may forget what it was you always wanted to do for you.
Everyday has meaning, every moment has a lesson, every second has an option.
If you don’t slow down & seize those now, your life will have meant – nothing.
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do, than by the ones you did do”……
See you tomorrow…

You might need to keep reminding me Linda because I say this all the time.
Hi Linda – I do love your post and your suggestions for chilling out. Your posts always have so much value – i know I have said that before but it’s true. Great topic too. Thanks so much!
I so need to read this post regularly Linda. I do understand the need to chill on all levels but I am guilty of saying that I am too busy. It is crazy when I understand I need to chill out. I love your ideas and I think given I live in a smallish town to get out of here would be a good start. Thanks LInda .
Loved this Linda… I find it hard to ‘take time off’ however I do meditate and read and Walk most days – Loved your tips.. thanks
I love the sound of this one … “sitting in an overstuffed chair, sipping a cup of coffee … in a book store!” Oh how heavenly! That’s one thing I miss about being in the States. Can’t do that here 🙂
For me, my quiet time is walking Lucy in the park every day. It’s like a walking meditation where I get to have those “Eckhart Tolle” moments when I just lose myself in the magic of the blades of wet grass twinkling in the sun or the sounds of a busy little Woodpecker high in a tree.
Wasn’t always like this though … I ran myself ragged working from 4am to midnight for quite some time … that took it’s toll in all areas of my life … never again!
Thank you for the reminder that it’s not selfish to take “ME” time!
