“I JUST DON’T LET THINGS GET TO ME!”
Are you a softie or a hard-nose about things?
Okay, I’ll be more polite about the question.
Do you enjoy thinking about pleasant memories of times you’ve had, or do you not think back about anything.
Everyone has their own way of storing memories both good & bad, & some actually don’t want to go back to those memories even when they were good ones.
Their response is: “they’re over & you can’t go back”, “it’s just a waste of time to dwell on those times, they aren’t real anymore”…
Well, those are pretty stiff responses but I’m bringing this point up for a reason today.
Sometimes in the busiest part of your life, you start going in circles & just becoming more & more uptight about your ‘world you live today’.
However, sometimes, going back to those nostalgic thoughts can really help to ground yourself.
Traveling your daily routine at such a fast speed only causes you to miss & lose touch with the everyday little things that touched your heart, because you’re so busy ‘filling your head’ with everyday task filling information.
When you purposefully let yourself go back & think about the little things that made you heart smile, it actually causes a physical response in your body that calms you.
Is it temporary, sure, but if you do it often enough, it can actually be more calming than any medication loaded with nothing but compounds that can cause side effects.
Okay, I can tell there are some of you wondering what I’m talking about.
Well, I’m talking about another way for you to find a point that you can ground yourself from all the busy fast life experiences you’re going through.
How all your deadlines & ‘work’ is just making you more & more uptight, without any outlets.
Many of these may not work for you or they never happened for you. That’s fine, just find one thought that does make you remember…
HOW TO LET NOSTALGIA WORK FOR YOU
(Memories to let yourself feel happy again)
The smell & sounds of a warm fireplace.
Climbing to the top of a windy hill with an amazing view.
Looking over childhood photos in the family album.
Watching your now-grown “child” leave home.
Taking a barefoot walk along a sandy beach.
Listening to a rippling brook runny over the rocks.
Watching your then “puppy” learn how to walk & run while still clumsy.
Seeing an old letter, browned with age, signed by one who loved you.
Singing your favorite song in the car with your best friend.
Visiting the quiet place were you were raised.
Walking through the woods in the autumn, hearing the crackling leaves beneath your feet, & feeling the chill in the air.
Standing silently beside the grave of a close personal friend or relative.
Getting yourself alone & reading aloud.
The snow, toboggans, ice skating & sleds.
Graduation diplomas, weddings you were in or attended.
Learning new poems or new song lyrics & melodies.
Christmas eve, late at night when everyone else went to bed.
Saying good-bye to someone you cared about.
I’m quite sure you have many more nostalgic memories to include.
But, if you let yourself think back, hear the sounds, smell the smells & visualize the scene, these can take you to a place that may have brought you joy & happiness.
As I indicated before, these pleasant thoughts & memories can physiologically bring a calmness to yourself & to your body. Just telling yourself to ‘calm down’ is not going to help, but nostalgia will.
If you think you have ‘nothing to be nostalgic about”, then you have the best opportunity to let your imagination soar. Just be sure you put in the sounds, smells & visual effects to help it feel more realistic. We all have vivid imaginations, where will yours take you?
Try it sometime, open your mind & your heart, let your mind take somewhere more pleasant. Take a mini-vacation…

Oh, I’m really resonating with nostalgia lately, it’s happy memories and occassionally I get a pang of ‘wish it were now’ but I love my memories…they are my default setting to get feeling good everyday! Thanks Linda, XO, Zen
Zen, I know you’re going through a whirlwind of emotions, but this will make you stronger, wiser & full of even more information than ever. You are about to share this wonderful opportunity to another part of the world which will bring even more incredible people to our family! I look forward to seeing you at events & on the hangouts. Just don’t forget about your ‘Midwest’ sister here! Thank you for all your training, but I know you’ll still be connected because we are on the same team.
What I love most about your blog posts Linda are the action steps outlined at the end for us to take. And in most cases nostalgia can be a bittersweet experience but you have outlined it to be a constructive and happy experience. Thank you Linda.
Nancy you are spot on in recognizing the purpose of my action steps being meant for a constructive & happy experience, to bring a sense of calm to those who need & do this process method properly. Thank you for your thoughts & insight, you always have such wonderful insights.
lovedyour list of things to think about…. I am currently doing lots of remincing having moved back to the UK… its great to go to my old ‘stomping’ grounds and remember 🙂 great share Linda, thank you
Thanks Helen.
Awesome, you made me think about my own nostalgic memories. Thanks Linda.
Oh Rhonda, those memories were already there, just begging to come out. I hope they brought a smile to your face.
I truly love when a random smell/song/breeze etc triggers a memory of a time when I was really happy in the past. This can be done manually with conscious thought obviously, but I do love the random unexpected ones more. Thanks for making my think of some happy memories right now Linda. <3
Shaun I’m so happy you were able to surface the fond memories from your past. They’re always there for you to visit & you should do that often, it’s a getaway to look forward to. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Im with Shaun here.
I love how I might singing along with a song and a memory pops into my head and off I go along memory lane.
We always have our memories when we are healthy, for me my memories are like smelling the roses along the way. We can enjoy the past and the present and make them both into what we want.
Our brains are very amazing
Thanks Linda
Di
