“I’m Just Not Very Creative!” | How to bring out the Creative side of yourself

“I’M JUST NOT VERY CREATIVE!”

Have you ever wondered when you’ve looked at something: “how did they do that”, or even: “why didn’t I think of that”…..

There are as many ways to be creative , as there are people on this planet.  However, the key is that no 2 people are completely alike.

So, what does all this creative stuff mean to you?

Your own unique style, imagination & creativity is all your own, & no one can take it away from you!

You have a unique gift.  Your thoughts & ideas have always been there since you can remember, but you’ve never pulled them out have you.

Most of you have thoughts about something  you heard, or even learned from someone or something.  But, you’ve never really put them to work for yourself, or even tried them.

You have had these things in your mind & stored in your brain, but never thought about them hard enough to actually bring them to the your creative mechanism in your brain.

How did they get there?

Again, you either saw, heard or learned the information at some point in your life & the information was stored in your mind in the creative area of your “library”, in your brain.

“So how do I get that information out?”

Think intensely enough about it & give it time to come out, it may come out in a dream, while doing something else, in a day, several days, a week, there’s no timeline.

But, if you think about strongly enough, then just walk away & let it be, it will come out.

TRUE STORY:

When I was born, my parents owned a Boat Marina on the lake & we practically lived there, in fact that is where I grew up & it was so fascinating to me.

They sold boats, serviced them, restored, refinished them (wooden boats), & even stored boats.

It was very big, with picnic areas, several piers, and so big that a little one like myself had plenty of room to get into trouble, which I did much of the time.

Although I pretty much had the run of the place, that turned out to be the foundation of where I began my fascination with restoration & refinishing of wood / boats.

Little did know, I was really learning how my creative mind really works & the process of how my mind was able to retained, accumulate & spit out information in later years to come.

Keep in mind, although I was all around boats & even driving them at such a very young age before even starting school, I was never involved in the restoration or refinishing part the boats nor was I even allowed to be in there.

But eventually, my Dad let me sit & watch in the boat restoration area, where they built & repaired all the customers boats.

I guess he liked all my endless questions about “what are you doing”, & the 100 “why’s” I would ask, so I could be in there without any objections or problems.

However, the refinishing area of the boat house/marina, had a big scarey red sign that said: “Restricted Area”.

Needless to say, I learned immediately what that big scary red sign with the big ‘R’ word, meant;  “Linda, stay out of there & don’t ever go in there”.

Why?, because any dust & bugs are the demons of a refinisher, in the Restricted Area” & no one could go in or out the door.

So, like any kid told not to do something, when a boat was brought into the “Restricted Area” I would hide I there & just watch.

Of course I eventually got caught hiding in the restricted area of the boat house marina.

But, after pleading my case, my Dad was great about teaching & although I was young, he talked his way through the process of refinishing boats, & anything wood.

So, what does that story have to do with creative thinking?

Keep reading, it’s very simple.

In those early years, although I was too young to actually do any of the restoration or refinishing work, I listened, watched, asked questions.

All that knowledge I received & saw from a real craftsman about the art of Restoration, Refinishing, was stored in my mind.

By the time I was 9 years old, I was the one doing all the hands on work with restoration & refinishing of boats on my own, & my Dad was the Inspector.

How?  All of that information was there in my brain & I just had to think about it intensely enough, give it time to come to me & pull it out of my creative mind, called your creative mechanism.

This process of creative memory served me well throughout my life in everything I learned & did.

While in nursing, to survive working in ER which meant I intensely became involved first in: the watching, the questions, the doing, much of which cannot be learned from just reading a book.

Then after my experience earned my place to be assigned to the busiest & worst times to be in ER: every Friday, Saturday & Sunday’s, 12 hour shifts, in the Trauma areas, this is where even more information was crammed into my mind.

However, during the week, I had my own Refinishing & Restoration shop/business, where I continued to work on boats & furniture pulling out the information I needed to do all the work required as a refinisher & restoration.

The point of these true stories, is to show you that regardless of how extreme the information is that you see, hear, learn or do, it’s all stored in your mind.

If you think intensely enough, the information you have will come out when you need it, but you have to be patient.  I call it: “be still”, it will come to you, it just depends on how bad you want it…

Never underestimate what you have the ability to do.

You never know, it just may become a passion, you never knew you had, like it did for me!

Go back & look at the cover photo of the deck of that boat, on this post.

Look at how the clouds at sunset reflect off of that deck finish.

That reflection you see off of that deck, is when you know you’ve done something right, with your creative thinking…..

“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way.  If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse”…..
