“Why Am I Always Sick!” | Here are some ways to avoid getting sick

“WHY AM I ALWAYS SICK!”

There are many reasons why people get sick.

Some of there reasons are out of your control.

However, as a nurse I am going to share some very common sense things, avoidable things, that will help you from getting sick so much.

Now, for some of you I can already hear what you’re saying, “Oh I already know these things”.

Well that’s good, but maybe you are the one who’s always coming down with something. (yeah, my patients have tried that too, but wind up coming in for help).

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO AVOID GETTING SICK

If you cough or sneeze:

do it into a tissue or your bent elbow away from people, throw away the tissue INTO the garbage & wash your hands immediately.

  • Fact:  a sneeze into the open air can spread beyond an 8-10 foot area & lingers in the air for up to 10 minutes.

Always clean surfaces you’re about to touch before using them:

use a germ killing disinfectant on items like computer keyboards, phones, pens, desk items, door knobs, etc.

  • Fact:  some germs can remain alive for up to 24 hours on the surface of items unless killed by a disinfectant.

Stop touching you eyes, nose, or mouth:

germs can enter your body the easiest through these pathways.

  • Fact: bacteria / germs are kept alive by getting transferred into the areas & then invade your own system & continue to grow.

Avoid people with colds, sniffles or congestion:

whenever possible leave plenty of space between you & the other person, even when they tell you “it’s only allergies”.

  • Fact: germs are in the form of droplets, airborne & contact.

Wash your hands often:

germs can be picked up so easily from grocery carts, ATM / payment machines, shaking someone’s hands, handrails & any type of door knob/bar, money (coins & bills), gas pump handles & screens, restaurant menus (the most filthiest item of all), bathroom use, gym & training equipment.

  • Fact:  Anything you touch should be followed by using a disinfectant, due to germs being left behind from the prior person touching it.

Get plenty of sleep:

fatigue will run down your body & immune system, not to mention your thought process.

  • Fact:  rest directly effects your body’s ability to handle an illness, because your immune system is already busy actively fighting off germs.

It really doesn’t take a rocket scientist, a physician or a nurse to get you to realize how often we get sick from each other on a daily basis.

Now, I’m not referring to a medical organ illness or major disorder.

I am only referring to germs / bacteria that YOU can avoid yourself.

No one is immune from these things & facts I have listed above.

And I know there are those of you who think you never get sick.

Remember:  Even a strong immune system weakens as you age, everyday.

Instead, just heed the warning & learn from the above.

hmm food for thought bc I haven’t been sick in 8 years and don’t use antibacterial anything.
I do wash my hands fairly often (thank goodness!) but great tips bc even if you know them it’s always good to hear it again! Thanks, Linda

  2. When I used to work on cruise ships we’d have over 1,000 new guests every week. I used to never, ever touch any of the stair case rails as I could only imagine what was on them!!!

But I also have a belief system that says, “I never get sick”. I should probably turn that around to “I am always healthy”. But I do have a strong belief system that i never get sick. And in fact, I’m always quite surprised if I ever do get sick.

    Great post as always Linda!
