OH, MY BACK HURTS!

I hear this all the time.

The Patients come in with the ‘oh my back hurts’ complaints.

The staff comes to work with the “oh my back hurts’ complaints.

Over & over we here the warnings of what not to do, the warnings of what to do.  But apparently no is listening.

So today I’m going to share with you some thoughts, so you don’t have to say “oh my back hurts”.

How to avoid hurting your back all the time.

Sit down to put on your socks, shoes, pants, & do NOT bend over to do that.

Lift heavy objects no higher than your waist.

Avoid lying or / or sleeping on your stomach.

Bend at your hips, not at  your waist.

Get down on one knee, before picking up a small child or infant from the floor.

When reading, don’t bend your neck & shoulders, bring the book up to your eyes.  Place the book, or whatever you’re reading from, on 2 pillows on your lap & propping the book on top of them.

Your back & back muscles are what carry all your weight of your body.  If you strain your back muscles because you are not properly using your back, your back’s going to hurt.

If you have chronic back pain without an old fracture injury or disc / vertebrae issue, check your posture & the list above.

If you still have chronic back pain & you are doing the proper things from the above list, check your scale.

Being over weight puts too much pressure on your back & when your back is what carries all your weight, it may be too much.

This can also be said from chronic knee pain.

Be careful not to abuse your body, you need every bit of it

Take the time to use good body mechanics & don’t be in such a hurry, you’ll hurt something else….

“Pay attention & listen to what your body needs, for health & vitality”….

I suffered with lower back pain for years Linda. I did a lot of gymnastics and dance when I was growing up and there was not the awareness about backs that there is today. I spent a lot of money at Chiropractors, Osteopaths etc and then I discovered pilates. It so helped and I seldom get pain anymore.
Great tips you have here on how to avoid it. Thanks Linda.

Sue I’m so sorry you’ve had this painful experience. Many Coaches seem to forget the spine is not really that flexible with so many of those moves, during the growing & shaping years of children’s lives. Glad you found Pilates for your relief. Thank you Sue for sharing, I hope you’re doing well.

I think you wrote this post just for me Linda! I was hit by a car when I was 15 and never thought too much about it as I “appeared” to heal fine.

In my late 20’s I went to a chiropractor and he asked me if I’d had any back trauma. I said no. And then he pointed to an x-ray and said, “What happened when you were 15 or 16?”

I remembered the accident and I said, “Oh I got hit by a car when I was riding my bike!” And he rolled his eyes and said, “That’s back trauma!”

I for one am extremely careful of everything I do with my back … and I do love the reminder thank you.

My back hurts every day … but it’s “manageable” … if I’m careful.

OMG Erica, I had no idea of your accident. Back trauma is a life long chronic issue that we can only cope with on a daily basis. About 16 years ago, I was trimming tree limbs hanging over my deck. Because the deck was on the 2nd story of my house, I didn’t have a tall enough ladder, so I stood on the deck railing & had someone hang on to me. Well when one of the limbs shifted, I was thrown off balance, I threw the chainsaw off away to the ground,, I fell backwards, but “catcher” ran off so as to not get hit!. I fell backwards fortunately onto the deck direction, but on top of iron-rod patio furniture, flat on my back, & sustained compression fractures of L4-L5 of my back. So, I can certainly understand your chronic pain, The type of chronic pain from back trauma is a daily pain that is barely manageable sometimes, but we learn to cope with it regardless of the situation. However, if we’re not careful, it can easily “manage” us. I’m so sorry about your accident & back issue Erica. Thank you for sharing your story.
